What is Essential Oil?
Essential oils are volatile, aromatic oils from plants, extracted directly from te bark, flower, fruit, leaf, seed or root of a plant or tree. Some essential oils are unique because the plants used to make them have different chemical makeups. Some plants can yield different essential oils, depending on what part of the plant is processed, some plants can yield different essential oils. Additional factors such as location, soil, and climate also affect aromatic properties.
For an oil to be classified as a true essential oil, it must be separated by physical means only. The physical methods used to separate the oils are distillation or expression.
Distillation is the most common process of extracting essential oils from plants; a process which separates the oil and water based compounds of a plant by steaming.. The advantage of distillation is that the volatile components can be distilled at lower temperatures and are easily separated from the water.
There are three types of Distillation
- Water distillation where the material is in direct contact with water, most often employed with flowers(rose and orange blossoms).
- Water and Steam distillation used for herb and leaf material. The plant material is not in direct contact with the water and indirect steam is used
- Steam Distillation is the most commonly used. Steam is injected into the still, usually at slightly higher pressures and temperatures than the the other two methods
Expression, also referred to as cold pressing, is a method of extraction specific to citrus peel oils, such as tangerine, lemon, bergamot, sweet orange, and lime.
What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy, also referred to as Essential Oil therapy, is the art of using pure essential oils, to relax, balance and rejuvenate body, mind and spirit. Aroma means scent, and therapy means treatment. Aromatherapy, then, is the use of the fragrant parts of aromatic plants to improve your health and general well being.
Aromatherapy offers pure indulgence. Inhaling a whiff of an aroma of someone cooking in the kitchen, a clean load of laundry or a fresh bunch of flowers is at the heart of aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy has many credited with multiple benefits. Inhaling a fragrance can reduce stress, lift a depression, hasten a good night’s sleep, soothe your soul, or possibly give you more energy. It has been said aromatherapy can help people stay alert in the office while doing repetitive mental tasks.
